In this episode, I take you along a trail I know personally — Pikrovrisi tis Merikas — a short but incredibly layered walk in the Troodos Mountains that reveals how Cyprus was once part of an ancient ocean. We move through the Maroullena gorge, where pillow lavas and hyaloclastite tell the story of underwater volcanic eruptions. This is also one of the last places where the Cypriot water snake survives, hidden in the cool river corridor. We cross the Venetian bridge, proposed for UNESCO listing, and follow the landscape as it opens into agricultural terraces and then into the quiet shade of Apalos Forest. The trail loops back through Kalo Chorio Oreinis, where you can still see parts of the old Petravlako aqueduct, a reminder of how mountain communities engineered water long before modern systems. Nearby lies Kokkinoritsos, the old ochre‑and‑copper mine that connects village life directly to the volcanic geology beneath it.
